The Great Stone Circle

The Great stone circle is located at Grange on the shores of Lough Gur in county Limerick. The circle is 45.7 meters in diameter and the Orthostats (standing stones) reach 4 meters in height. Behind and supporting the Orthostats is an earthen bank almost a metre in width and just over a metre in height.
The Great stone circle is the largest in Ireland and is aligned to the sun. At Dawn on mid summers morning (the summer solstice 21st June, longest day of the year) the sun rises and shines through the circle at a certain point.
The site dates back to the early Bronze age around 2000 B.C.
